Five Factors to Consider when Choosing to Age at Home

Five Factors to Consider when Choosing to Age at Home

A lot of aging people prefer to age at home because this is where they built memories, feel comfortable and have familiar surroundings. However, some medical issues and other factors may prevent a senior from staying at home. For those planning to age at home, it is imperative to consider the following:

  • Availability of a Caregiver

As people age, they may be counting on their family or friends to meet their needs. At first, help may not be such an issue as seniors may still be able to do most things on their own. However, their age and health condition may later prevent them from doing things so they need somebody to help them including personal care such as bathing or moving from place to another. Family caregivers must know if they can be there as their aging loved one’s needs grow. If family members cannot ensure their loved one has all the support available to meet his/her needs, aging at home may not be the right option.

  • Easy Access to Important Areas or Things in the House

The home the senior is planning to age at must have wide doors for a wheelchair. Bathrooms need to have grab bars that are properly positioned. Also, it is important that all main areas are on the first floor. The senior’s current home can be modified to accommodate his/her needs. And family members can compare the renovation cost to the cost of assisted living to determine if the modification is a realistic option.

  • Transportation Access

Aging can make seniors unable to drive over time. A lot of them depend on their family or friends to drive to places for them. If a senior prefers to age at home, he/she needs to have easy access to transportation services to get to his/her medical appointments or to stores. Family members can choose to assign people to take turns with the driving or hire non-medical home care services in Norman, Oklahoma.

  • Possibility of Connecting with Others

Aging at home can result in isolation which can develop into loneliness and depression over time. So if a senior prefers to age at home, it is important to ensure he/she can socialize with others or his/her community to prevent isolation. Family members should set up times for their aging loved ones to meet their friends or join community gatherings for seniors and make transportation available.

  • His/Her Mental and Physical Condition

How mobile is your elderly loved one? Can he/she keep himself/herself clean? Is he/she keeping up with his/her medical needs every day? Is he/she suffering from a chronic illness which continues to get worse? Is he/she showing some concerning memory problems? If your loved one has any of these issues, he/she surely needs to be with somebody while aging at home.
